Gasoline Additives: Do They Clean Your Fuel System or Just Empty Your Wallet?

By Randy Wades

It’s a tale as old as time – boy meets car, car runs like garbage, boy uses off-the-shelf fuel additive to boost efficiency and bring some life back to the engine, boy feels no change.

Sound familiar?

Look, gasoline additives have emerged as a universal presence, promising everything from enhanced engine performance to improved fuel economy. Yet, amid the myriad of products lining the shelves, drivers are left to ponder one crucial question: do gasoline additives actually deliver on their lofty claims, or are they merely a costly horsesh**?

At their core, gasoline additives are ‘formulated to optimize engine performance and preserve the integrity of the fuel system’. With a wide range of products from detergents designed to clean fuel injectors and intake valves to corrosion inhibitors aimed at safeguarding vital components, the alleged benefits of these additives are extensive.

Even manufacturers throw out claims of improved fuel efficiency, emission reduction, and prolonged engine life - enticing everyday drivers with the all-too-sweet allure of enhanced performance and longevity.

And yes, while certain additives may yield marginal improvements in fuel system cleanliness, the extent of their impact is often overstated and outright false.

In reality, modern fuels are already equipped with a variety of detergent additives mandated by government regulations to ensure adequate engine cleanliness. As such, the incremental benefits provided by aftermarket gasoline additives may be negligible at best.

“So what pray to tell, should I do instead Randy?”

Pipe down and I’ll tell you! For those seeking to maintain a crisp, clean, and efficient fuel system without relying on questionable additives there are w few alternative strategies to keep in your pocket – next to those dolla-dolla bills.

First and foremost - utilize high-quality fuels from reputable sources. These powerful fuels often contain a higher concentration of detergents and additives compared to budget-friendly alternatives. Does that mean you have to run race fuel or even 93 Octane on the regular?

Hell no, not in this economy. But giving your daily driver a splash of the old 90 from a well-researched gas station now and again might help you out in the long run.

Secondly, and I’m aware this backtracks my whole statement, but putting a dash of Marvel Mystery oil in at fill-ups can help. The product is marketed as a versatile lubricant and fuel system cleaner and unlike most other additives, ye’ ol’ MM boasts a pretty loyal following who swear by its purported benefits – myself included.

Just remember, while Marvel Mystery Oil may indeed offer a bit of cleansing, I highly advise exercising caution when relying solely on it for fuel system maintenance.

This brings me to my third point – Clean out your godforsaken engine!

Regular maintenance practices are key — things like regular oil changes, air filter replacements, and periodic fuel system cleanings (with approved treatments) — can help mitigate the accumulation of deposits and contaminants in your engine AND fuel system.

“Oh but Randy, what about dry gas?”

What about it? That’s a whole different ball game.

Unlike those high-priced additives you find on the Sunoco shelves, dry gas serves a purpose. It’s specifically designed to draw out and absorb access moisture. And, while it isn’t a substitute for proper fuel quality assurance, popping a bit of dry gas into your maintenance regimen (especially during winter) can put your mind at ease during months of temperature fluctuations and heavy humidity.

Or when the goddam snow keeps rearing its ugly head…

Now get out there and save your money for things that matter – like tires and brakes.
